Being overweight welcomes health problem

Weight loss of 5 to 15 percent can reduce the chances of developing heart ailments or having a stroke. Ten pounds reduction will do wonders if you weigh 200 pounds. This will help improve triglyceride, blood pressure, blood flow, inflammation, and cholesterol levels.

Say “hello” to Cancer…
The dreaded ‘C.’ Cancer starts with the cells. The body makes new cells as needed. This means replacing the cells, which already died but just like any normal process, sometimes, things go out of way. Old cells do not die when they are expected to and new cells are produced even there’s no need for them which pave the way for the formation of tumors. It may grow in any part of the body and may spread to other parts.

How is Cancer related to being overweight?
Common cancers associated with being overweight are cancers of the esophagus, colon and kidney. If one is overweight, there is a tendency to have an acid reflux, which in the end will cause cancer of the esophagus. Body fat increases the insulin production, which causes cell growth. For females, being overweight increase their chances of developing breast cancer or cervical cancer because of the excessive amount of estrogen in the blood.

What should be done?
Prevention of acid reflux and formation of gallstone and the right insulin and estrogen levels can all be achieved if the person loses weight. This will decrease the cancer risk.

Say “hello” to Sleep Apnea…
Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder. This makes the person stop breathing for as long as 30 seconds as he sleeps. The short stops may occur several times during the sleep. Difficulty in concentrating, daytime sleepiness and a heart failure may be experienced or developed by a person with sleep apnea.

How is Sleep Apnea related to being overweight?
Overweight individuals have more fatty tissues stored around the neck, thus blocking the trachea (passage or windpipe). A smaller windpipe can make breathing hard, cause loud snoring or stop breathing.

What should be done?
If untreated, sleep apnea may cause further problems like heart disease, stroke, or death by traffic accidents. So to get rid of the fats around the neck and inflammation, lose some weight.


Say “hello” to Osteoarthritis…
Osteoarthritis is the condition caused by the loss of cartilage in the joints. It commonly affects the weight-bearing joints like the knees, lower back and the hips.

How is Osteoarthritis related to being overweight?
Large amounts of body fats cause higher levels of substances that cause inflammation. Inflammation of joints raises the risk of having osteoarthritis. Being overweight adds pressure to the cartilages and joints, causing them to break down.

What should be done?
Losing weight will decrease the pressure on the hips, knees and lower back and it will also lessen the inflammation in the body. If you already have osteoarthritis, giving a shot at weight loss will improve your condition.

Say “hello” to Gallbladder disease…
Gallstones are pebble-like substances, which form in the gallbladder. How are they formed?

Bile is a liquid produced by the liver, which aids in digestion. This bile contains waste products like fats, bile salts, water, cholesterol, bilirubin and proteins. Sometimes, the bile liquid has so much cholesterol and bile salts- these form to gallstones once hardened.

How is Gallbladder disease related to being overweight?
Overweight people have more cholesterol in their bodies. These people may also have swollen gallbladder, which may not function normally.

What should be done?
Gradual weight loss of not more than 2 pounds each week is recommended to prevent formation of gallstones. Drastic weight loss may do otherwise.

Say “hello” to Fatty Liver disease…
When fats forms in the liver cells and cause liver inflammation, a fatty liver disease is likely to occur. It sometimes lead to further complications like serious liver damage, scarring of the liver, high blood pressure in the veins entering the liver, kidney failure, enlarged veins of the stomach and esophagus or liver failure. It is believed that liver problems are common but not limited to alcoholics. There are people who drink little or do not drink at all but still suffer from this.

How is Fatty Liver disease related to being overweight?
Pre-diabetics or diabetics are likely to develop fatty liver disease. Do you remember that overweight individuals are likely to have diabetes? One thing leads to another. It is all because of being an overweight.

What should be done?
Control sugar levels by losing weight. It will also prevent build up of fats in the liver. People who are already suffering from this condition should avoid drinking alcoholic drinks.

To sum up, a decrease of 5 percent in your body weight will lower the risk for the mentioned diseases.  Keep in mind to make the weight loss gradual. It took a long while to accumulate all the fats stored in the body so it will also take some time to break it all down. Eat the right foods at the right time and engage in physical activities like walking, jogging and aerobics.
